Can the Elac Debut 2.0 B5.2 Really Beat Speakers Twice the Price?

Elac has been in the loudspeaker business since the 1980s and has built a reputation for delivering excellent value across its product lines. The Elac Debut 2.0 B5.2 bookshelf speakers represent one of the company’s finest budget-friendly efforts to date.

These speakers feel solid, are relatively unfussy about placement, and handle almost any genre of music with ease. They offer dynamic expression, strong detail retrieval, and tonal balance that allows them to scale even further with higher-quality equipment. For the money, they are nothing short of exceptional.

Build & Design

Elac has refined almost everything in the Debut 2.0 series compared to the original Debut range. The B5.2 cabinets are still compact but have slightly altered proportions: 34cm tall, 18cm wide, and 23cm deep. These tweaks help them look slimmer and more modern, while remaining unobtrusive in most rooms.

The 5.25-inch (13cm) aramid-fiber mid/bass driver has been completely reworked with a stiffer cone and improved damping. Even the dust cap has changed to a lenticular shape, which enhances integration at the crossover point (2.2kHz). A front-facing bass reflex port makes placement near walls easier compared to rear-ported rivals.

The 25mm tweeter now uses a wide-surround design with extended high-frequency response up to a claimed 35kHz (up from 20kHz in the previous model). This results in greater openness and improved dispersion.

Internally, the enclosure is built from braced MDF for reduced resonance and distortion, giving the B5.2s a more solid foundation. Connectivity is via a single pair of robust binding posts. The only finish available is black ash vinyl, which is neat but a little understated compared to more stylish competitors.

Setup & Compatibility

The B5.2s are unfussy to set up. They work best on rigid stands with at least 30cm of breathing room from the rear wall, but remain balanced even in tighter spaces. They don’t demand much toe-in, producing a wide and stable soundstage with minimal effort.

In terms of partnering equipment, they are more revealing than rivals like the Q Acoustics 3020i or Dali Spektor 2, leaning towards analysis rather than warmth. Poor-quality electronics won’t be masked, but neither will flaws be exaggerated. With quality entry-level separates, these speakers truly shine.

Pair them with an amp like the Marantz PM6006 UK Edition or Rega Brio, and the B5.2s come alive. Feed them something dense and layered like Madonna’s Ray of Light, and they unravel the complexity with surprising composure. Play Dave Brubeck’s Time Out, and they track rhythmic shifts with precision and musicality.

Sound Quality

What stands out most is the balance and refinement. The B5.2s are detailed without sounding clinical, dynamic without aggression, and neutral enough to handle both modern and classic recordings.

Compared to competitors:

  • They don’t have the lush midrange warmth of the Dali Spektor 2.
  • They lack some of the sweetness of the Q Acoustics 3020i.
  • But they counter with better insight, composure, and scale than either.

The result is a versatile, engaging speaker that adapts across genres from electronica to jazz with surprising ease.

Conclusion

Elac has delivered one of its best budget designs with the Debut B5.2 bookshelf speakers. For their price, they combine detail, dynamics, and balance in a way that few rivals can match. They won’t flatter poor recordings, but pair them with decent electronics and they’ll reward you with performance well beyond their price point.

If established budget brands aren’t concerned about the B5.2, they probably should be.
