Yamaha’s New CXR12 mk3 Puts 1,100 Watts Into a 15.4kg Speaker
Yamaha has introduced the CXR12 mk3, a new two-way loudspeaker designed for the parts of the audio world where portability, output and reliability matter more than having a speaker disappear into the living room.
The new model is aimed at musicians, mobile DJs, rental companies and corporate event planners, and it joins the third generation of Yamaha’s CXR range with a 12-inch woofer, compression-driver tweeter and a claimed maximum output of 1,100 watts.
Despite that power figure, the CXR12 mk3 weighs just 15.4 kg.
That combination is probably one of the most interesting things about the new Yamaha. It is designed to be moved, mounted, suspended, and used in different configurations without turning every setup into a two-person job.
Yamaha Built the CXR12 mk3 Around a 12-Inch Woofer
At the center of the CXR12 mk3 is a proprietary 12-inch woofer, paired with a 1.75-inch compression tweeter featuring a polyimide diaphragm.
Yamaha rates the speaker for a maximum sound pressure level of 124 dB, while the claimed frequency response extends from 51 Hz to 20 kHz.
That gives the CXR12 mk3 the kind of bandwidth expected from a serious portable PA speaker, while the 12-inch low-frequency driver should provide enough authority for music playback without requiring an enormous cabinet.
The speaker has a stated 94 dB sensitivity and an 8-ohm impedance, making it suitable for use with conventional professional power amplification.
But Yamaha has also been thinking beyond the hardware.
The Yamaha PX Amplifier Can Change How It Sounds
One of the more interesting aspects of the CXR12 mk3 is its integration with Yamaha’s PX-series power amplifiers.
When the amplifier is running firmware V1.66 or later, the system can automatically apply factory presets specifically designed for the CXR12 mk3. Yamaha says these settings are intended to improve clarity, increase headroom and make the overall system more efficient.
That means the speaker isn’t being treated as an isolated component.
Yamaha is effectively building a larger system around the CXR12 mk3, with the amplifier and loudspeaker able to work together using the manufacturer’s predefined settings.
For rental companies and event professionals, that kind of integration can be particularly useful. Instead of spending time manually dialing in a system for each setup, the appropriate factory configuration can do much of the work.
One Speaker, Several Ways to Use It
The CXR12 mk3 isn’t restricted to conventional speaker-stand duty.
Its symmetrical cabinet allows it to be used as a floor monitor, while the base includes a dual pole mount that allows the speaker to be positioned upright or tilted by 7 degrees.
Yamaha has also included suspension points for permanent or temporary installations, along with integrated transport handles for moving the speaker between venues.
That flexibility is important for a speaker aimed at musicians, mobile DJs and event companies.
A single design can serve as a main PA speaker, monitor or installed loudspeaker depending on what the job requires.
It Is Smaller Than You Might Expect
The CXR12 mk3 measures 36.6 × 60 × 35 cm and weighs 15.4 kg.
Those dimensions make it reasonably compact for a 12-inch professional loudspeaker, particularly considering the claimed 1,100-watt maximum power and 124 dB maximum SPL.
The cabinet is therefore doing two jobs at once.
It needs to accommodate enough acoustic volume for the 12-inch woofer while remaining manageable enough to transport and position in real-world professional environments.
That is where the CXR12 mk3 makes more sense than simply looking at its power rating.
