The $211,000 Speaker That Left Audiophiles Speechless: Beolab 90 at AXPONA

High-end audio shows are where dreams meet reality for audiophiles. Towering loudspeakers, exotic amplifiers, and systems that cost more than luxury cars all gather in one place to demonstrate what modern audio engineering can achieve.

Few events capture this spirit better than AXPONA, held each year near Chicago’s O’Hare Airport. The show brings together thousands of audiophiles, music lovers, engineers, and more than 700 manufacturers showcasing some of the world’s most advanced sound systems.

Walking through the halls of the Westin Hotel, you’ll find everything from massive monoblock amplifier systems driving multi-tower loudspeakers to compact streaming systems designed for modern living spaces. There are rooms dedicated to ultra-high-end listening experiences, and a huge ballroom where companies present cables, accessories, and rare vinyl records.

But during this year’s visit, one system stood out immediately.

It came from Bang & Olufsen.

And it was unlike anything else at the show.

Why Bang & Olufsen Appeared at an Audiophile Show

For many audiophiles, Bang & Olufsen has always carried a reputation that sparks debate.

Some enthusiasts view the Danish company as a luxury lifestyle brand focused heavily on design. Others know B&O for its engineering innovation and elegant integration of technology into everyday living spaces.

At a hardcore audiophile event like AXPONA, seeing B&O exhibit might initially raise eyebrows.

But the company had a very clear reason for attending.

They were there to showcase one of the most ambitious loudspeakers they had ever created — the Bang & Olufsen Beolab 90.

First Encounter With the Beolab 90

Standing face-to-face with the Beolab 90 is an experience.

These speakers are enormous, futuristic, and visually striking. Each cabinet weighs around 300 pounds and features sweeping curves wrapped in acoustic fabric with aluminum detailing.

At the base, a curved wooden section anchors the design visually, giving the speaker a sense of balance and elegance despite its size.

From certain angles, the speakers almost resemble modern architectural sculptures.

Walking around them, it becomes clear that Bang & Olufsen approached this project very differently from traditional speaker manufacturers.

The goal wasn’t simply to build another expensive audiophile loudspeaker.

The goal was to build a complete audio system inside a loudspeaker.

A Concept Speaker Celebrating 90 Years of Innovation

The Beolab 90 was originally conceived to celebrate 90 years of Bang & Olufsen engineering.

Instead of focusing solely on passive acoustic design, the company integrated an enormous amount of digital technology into the speaker.

Inside each Beolab 90 are:

  • 18 Scan-Speak drivers
  • 18 individual amplifiers
  • 8,200 watts of total amplification
  • Advanced digital signal processing (DSP)

This makes the Beolab 90 not just a loudspeaker, but an entire high-performance audio system in a single enclosure.

All the user needs is a music source.

Intelligent Room Calibration

One of the biggest challenges in high-end audio demonstrations is the listening environment.

At audio shows, manufacturers often spend hours positioning speakers, adjusting equipment, and attempting to overcome the acoustic limitations of hotel rooms.

The Beolab 90 takes a very different approach.

Instead of relying purely on placement, the speakers use advanced room calibration technology.

Using a supplied microphone and control interface, the system analyzes the listening environment and compensates for:

  • Wall reflections
  • Furniture placement
  • Speaker position
  • Listening position

Once the system completes calibration, it adjusts the sound automatically using internal DSP processing.

This dramatically simplifies setup while maintaining excellent sound quality.

Beam Width Control – A Unique Listening Experience

One of the most fascinating features of the Beolab 90 is its Beam Width Control technology.

Through the control app or remote, listeners can change how the sound spreads throughout the room.

Three primary listening modes are available:

Narrow Mode (Focused Listening)

This mode creates a tightly focused soundstage directed toward a specific listening position.

It’s ideal for critical listening sessions that demand precise imaging and maximum detail.

Wide Mode (Relaxed Listening)

Wide mode expands the soundstage, filling more of the room with sound while maintaining stereo balance.

This is great for casual listening.

Omni Mode (360-Degree Sound)

In this mode, the speakers distribute sound in every direction, creating a room-filling effect perfect for gatherings or parties.

The ability to dynamically change the sound dispersion makes the Beolab 90 unlike any traditional loudspeaker system.

Listening to the Beolab 90

During the demonstration, the entire system operated through the Bang & Olufsen control application.

Music streamed seamlessly with no interruptions — an impressive achievement given the demanding conditions of a crowded audio show.

Several well-known tracks were played, including music from:

  • Eagles
  • Steely Dan
  • David Bowie
  • Led Zeppelin

The Beolab 90 delivered an enormous soundstage with tremendous power.

With 36 drivers working together across the stereo pair, the system produced a deep, full-bodied presentation that filled the room effortlessly.

Switching between beam modes created surprisingly dramatic differences in the listening experience.

In Narrow mode, the sound became highly focused with impressive clarity and imaging.
In Wide mode, the sound expanded outward, creating a more atmospheric presentation.

The system’s flexibility made it clear that these speakers were designed not only for audiophile listening but also for real-world living spaces.

A System That Redefines High-End Audio

Many audiophiles enjoy experimenting with different components — amplifiers, DACs, cables, and power conditioners.

The Beolab 90 takes the opposite approach.

Everything is already integrated.

Amplifiers, DSP processing, and room correction are all built directly into the speakers.

For some enthusiasts, this might remove the traditional hobby of upgrading gear.

But for others, it represents something extremely appealing:

A complete high-performance audio system that simply works.

Final Thoughts

Audiophiles will dislike its all-inclusive turn-key nature because it will cure Gear Acquisition Syndrome. For the rest of us, we have to conclude that if you are looking for a custom-built wireless active audio system to stream music, you’d be hard-pressed to find anything more luxurious or better-sounding than the Beolab 90. B&O connected all the dots by building all the amplifiers and advanced DSP inside the Beolab 90 loudspeaker and showed the way forward to the rest of the audiophile speaker crowd.

We think using the system with the control app adds to the enjoyment of the Beolab 90. We loved the gapless streaming, and imagine if we owned this system, tweaking the sound with the app or remote control would be a regular event. To be able to get electronic, rock, symphonies, and operas sounding just right would be an enjoyable exercise from the listening chair.

The Beolab 90 will not be for everybody, but it will be for someone who wants a very special loudspeaker that, in fact, is a complete audio system. It’s loaded with DSP room control to the ultimate degree, and the result is impressive, luxurious sound.
