Buchardt Audio Just Gave Its Active Speakers a Second Life With the New MK2 Upgrade Kit

There has always been one uncomfortable truth about active loudspeakers: the technology inside them can become outdated long before the speakers themselves are ready to be replaced.

Buchardt Audio is taking a very different approach.

The Danish company has announced its new MK2 Upgrade Kit, a major hardware update designed to bring several of its existing active loudspeakers up to the company’s latest electronics platform. Instead of buying an entirely new pair of speakers, owners of compatible models can replace the electronics inside their existing cabinets and gain a substantially more advanced amplifier and DSP system.

The upgrade is compatible with the Buchardt A500, A500SE, A700, A700 Limited Edition, and Anniversary 10.

And this isn’t simply a firmware update or a minor electronics revision. Buchardt says the MK2 kit replaces the complete amplifier, DSP, and power supply assembly.

That makes the announcement considerably more interesting than the usual software update.

The Problem With Active Speakers

Active speakers have an obvious advantage. The amplifier, DSP and loudspeaker drivers are designed to work together from the beginning, allowing manufacturers to control the entire signal chain.

But there is a downside.

Buy an active speaker today, and the electronics inside it are essentially part of the product you own. Streaming technology changes. Digital processing improves. Amplifier technology evolves. New connectivity standards appear.

The speaker cabinet and drivers might remain perfectly capable, but the electronics can eventually become the limiting factor.

Buchardt says it has been thinking about that problem for years.

“Whenever we can bring meaningful new technology to existing products, we believe we should,” the company says.

According to founder Mads Buchardt, the goal has been to design active speakers differently so that their electronics can evolve while the acoustic platform remains in service.

The MK2 Upgrade Kit is the clearest expression of that idea so far.

This Is More Than a DSP Update

The biggest reason the MK2 upgrade stands out is the scale of the hardware replacement.

Buchardt isn’t simply adding new software to the existing platform. The company has developed a completely new electronics system for its active loudspeakers.

At the center is a fully digital amplifier architecture using Axign’s digital Class-D amplifier controller.

Buchardt says the architecture eliminates unnecessary digital-to-analog conversion stages before amplification, while the new platform delivers 4 × 250 watts RMS per speaker, or 1,000 watts total per speaker.

The new electronics are also designed to produce less heat, operate more efficiently, and deliver significantly lower distortion than the previous generation.

For an active speaker, that matters.

The amplifier isn’t sitting in a separate chassis somewhere in the room. It is working inside the loudspeaker enclosure, where efficiency and thermal performance can directly affect the design.

Buchardt has also paired the new amplifier platform with a more powerful power supply intended to provide greater current reserves and additional headroom when music becomes demanding.

The MK2 DSP Platform Could Be the Biggest Upgrade

The amplifier hardware gets much of the attention, but the new DSP platform may ultimately be one of the most useful parts of the MK2 system.

The DSP now operates at 96 kHz / 32-bit, while giving owners considerably more control over how their speakers behave in their listening room.

That includes room correction using an iPhone or Buchardt’s dedicated Zen microphone, along with user-adjustable PEQ filters.

There is also adjustable ISO 226:2003 compensation / Low Level Enhancement (LLE), high-pass filtering and the ability to change Buchardt Mastertunings over the air.

That last feature is particularly interesting for owners who enjoy experimenting with different voicing options.

Rather than treating the speaker’s original tuning as something permanently fixed, the MK2 platform gives Buchardt more flexibility to introduce and update Mastertunings as the system develops.

The controls are accessed through the Buchardt App using a new onboard Bluetooth Low Energy interface.

Importantly, Buchardt says the Bluetooth connection is intended for app use. It isn’t being positioned as a replacement for the speaker’s primary audio connectivity.

More Connectivity for Future Systems

Buchardt has also expanded the connectivity options.

The MK2 platform adds digital coaxial input and output, giving owners more flexibility when building stereo systems and potentially integrating the speakers into future digital setups.

The speakers remain compatible with WiSA Wireless using any WiSA transmitter.

There is also an analog XLR input, with Buchardt using an ESS analog-to-digital converter for the analog input stage.

That combination gives the MK2 platform a useful mixture of modern digital connectivity and conventional high-quality analog integration.

Some Owners Get a New Tweeter Too

The upgrade isn’t identical across every compatible model.

For the earliest Buchardt active loudspeakers, including the A500, A500SE and A700, the MK2 Upgrade Kit also includes Buchardt’s latest RFA19 tweeter.

That means owners of those models aren’t simply receiving updated electronics.

They are also getting an acoustic component from Buchardt’s newer active speaker designs.

Buchardt says the RFA19 tweeter, combined with updated Mastertunings, is intended to improve overall resolution, reduce distortion, and provide better integration across the frequency range while retaining the fundamental character of each speaker.

That could make the upgrade particularly compelling for owners of the earlier active models.

You Can Install the Upgrade Yourself

Perhaps the most unusual part of the announcement is how Buchardt expects owners to install the MK2 system.

The company has designed the upgrade for owner installation using common hand tools.

That means compatible owners won’t necessarily have to ship their speakers back to Denmark or arrange a factory service appointment simply to replace the electronics.

Detailed installation instructions are included with each kit, while Buchardt says video installation guides are also being prepared.

It’s an approach that says something important about how the company views the lifespan of an active speaker.

Instead of treating the electronics as a sealed, disposable part of the product, Buchardt has designed the system so that the electronics can be accessed and replaced as the technology develops.

For owners who have already invested heavily in a pair of Buchardt speakers, that could be just as important as the new amplifier or DSP itself.

The Bigger Idea Behind Buchardt’s MK2 Upgrade

The MK2 Upgrade Kit is interesting because it addresses one of the biggest long-term questions surrounding active loudspeakers.

What happens when the speaker’s electronics become outdated?

With a conventional passive loudspeaker, the answer is relatively simple. The speaker can remain in a system for decades while amplifiers, DACs, streamers and other components are replaced around it.

Active speakers are different because much of that technology is built directly into the cabinet.

Buchardt is essentially trying to bring some of the upgradeability of a traditional separates-based system into the active speaker world.

The drivers and cabinet don’t need to be discarded simply because amplifier and DSP technology has moved forward.

Instead, the electronics can evolve.

That could become an increasingly important idea as active loudspeakers become more sophisticated and more manufacturers integrate streaming, DSP, wireless connectivity and amplification directly into their products.

Buchardt Audio says shipping for the MK2 Upgrade Kit will begin in October 2026.
