Revel Concerta2 MI6 Review

We’re surprised that a brand like Revel hasn’t made a bigger impact on the UK speaker market. All the ingredients for success are here: the speakers are well built, solidly engineered, and based on our listening experience, sound fantastic. With the backing of parent company Harman, Revel has the resources to inspire confidence in even the most discerning audiophile.

The M16s, part of the new Concerta2 series, are a bundle of fun. They may not be the most refined speakers in their class, but in terms of entertainment value, few rivals in this price range can match them. At £950, they deliver an impressive mix of performance, dynamics, and excitement.

Build and Design

A glance at the specs doesn’t reveal anything groundbreaking: medium-sized wood cabinets, a 25mm dome tweeter, and a 16cm ported mid/bass driver with metal diaphragms. They are single-wired, which we actually prefer, allowing you to focus your budget on one high-quality set of speaker cables instead of splitting between two.

Look closer, and you see the engineers at Revel have carefully optimized every detail. The curved, heavily braced cabinets not only provide a rigid, inert platform for the drivers but also look elegant. The concave waveguide in front of the tweeter isn’t just decorative; it improves dispersion and aligns the tweeter with the mid/bass driver at crossover frequencies.

The Bookshelf Speakers We Dreamed of Owning in the ’90s and Can Finally Afford Today

The acoustic lens covering the tweeter adds further precision, while the mid/bass driver features a ceramic-coated metal cone that balances stiffness with damping, both critical for clarity and musicality. The rear-firing port is sculpted to maximize output without introducing unwanted noise. Together with Revel’s meticulous engineering, these design choices create a standmount that can confidently compete with the best sub-£1,000 speakers.

Positioning

Setup couldn’t be simpler: place the speakers at least 30cm from a rear wall, keep them away from corners, and you’re ready to go. The attention to tweeter dispersion pays off; these speakers deliver a wide, open soundstage without being overly sensitive to slight changes in listener angle.

Sound Quality

The M16s excel in imaging and dynamics. Play a detailed classical piece, such as Tchaikovsky’s Italian Caprice Op.31, and the speakers deliver an impressively expansive stereo image, with every instrument precisely located. Even in busy passages, the presentation remains stable and well-layered.

Large-scale dynamics are a particular highlight. Crescendos hit hard but never sound compressed or harsh. Revel’s deep bass extends far beyond what you’d expect from a 37cm standmount, giving the impression of much larger floorstanders. The low end is not just powerful, it’s agile and musical, adding life to both orchestral and electronic music.

For example, Major Lazer’s Pon de Floor hits with authority, while the M16s maintain excellent attack and rhythmic drive. At the same time, subtle performances, such as Olafur Arnalds’ ambient compositions or Dusty Springfield’s vocals, come through with nuance and tact. The midrange is well-integrated, bringing vocals forward without dominance, and the speakers handle complex soundtracks, such as the Broadchurch OST, with ease.

One thing to note is system matching: the M16s are naturally clear, but if paired with an aggressive amplifier or source, they may sound slightly edgy. Compared to pricier leaders like the ATC SCM11, the M16s have a touch less sweetness, but this doesn’t detract significantly from their overall appeal.

Conclusion:

The Revel M16s are a joy to listen to. They may not be the most refined speakers in the world, but in terms of fun, energy, and engagement, they punch well above their weight. With strong build quality, excellent dynamics, and a wide, immersive soundstage, they offer a performance that’s hard to beat in the sub-£1,000 standmount category. At £950, they’re worth every penny.
