This New GaN Amplifier Could Change the Way High-End Home Theaters Get Their Power
Orchard Audio is bringing its GaN amplifier technology into the home theater world for the first time with the new Starkrimson HT Ultra series. The new multichannel power amplifiers are designed for serious home theater systems that need substantial power, while offering something a little different from the conventional Class D amplifiers most enthusiasts are familiar with.
The Starkrimson HT Ultra range includes three-, four-, and five-channel amplifiers, all built around a Class D architecture using gallium nitride (GaN) FETs instead of traditional silicon MOSFETs. Orchard Audio has already used this technology in its Starkrimson Stereo Ultra and Mono Ultra Premium stereo amplifiers, but the HT Ultra marks the company’s first move into multichannel home theater amplification.
What makes the new amplifiers particularly interesting is the way Orchard Audio has approached their power supplies.
Orchard Audio Gives Home Theater Amplification a Modular Power System
The Starkrimson HT Ultra uses a modular power supply system that allows the amplifier to be configured according to the demands of the system. Each power supply is rated at 1,200 watts, while optional capacitor boards add another 43,600 µF of capacitance per board.

The five-channel amplifier can be configured with one, three, or five power supplies, while the four-channel version can use one, three, or four. The three-channel model uses a single power supply.
At the top end, that means every amplifier channel can effectively have its own dedicated 1,200-watt power supply. That flexibility is particularly interesting for home theater installations where the front left and right channels may require considerably more power than the surround or height channels.
250 Watts Per Channel, With Plenty More Available Into 4 Ohms
The Starkrimson HT Ultra amplifiers are rated to deliver 250 watts per channel into 8 ohms. With a separate power supply serving the channel, or when a single supply is powering no more than two channels, that figure rises to 500 watts into 4 ohms.
Orchard Audio also says the output stages can drive a 2-ohm load and remain stable down to 1 ohm, giving the amplifiers considerable flexibility when paired with demanding speakers.
The signal path is fully balanced, with a gain of 19 dB. Orchard Audio is also running the Starkrimson HT Ultra modules at a switching frequency of approximately 800 kHz. According to the company, the high switching frequency helps reduce phase shifts and makes the output filtering easier to implement.
For a high-end home theater, the appeal isn’t simply having a big wattage number on the specification sheet. The modular approach gives installers and enthusiasts a way to allocate power where it is actually needed rather than automatically giving every channel the same power supply capacity.
The Interesting Part Is How Orchard Audio Wants You to Configure It
The Starkrimson HT Ultra appears to be aimed particularly at systems where the front speakers need substantially more power than the rear and height channels.

For example, a five-channel amplifier equipped with three power supplies can allocate additional power to the main stereo pair while still powering the remaining channels. That makes the design potentially attractive for systems where large, demanding front speakers handle most of the music and cinematic impact, while the surround channels have less demanding workloads.
It is a different approach from simply building one large multichannel amplifier and giving every channel an identical power supply arrangement.
How Much Does the Starkrimson HT Ultra Cost?
The Orchard Audio Starkrimson HT Ultra series is now available for pre-order, with suggested retail prices ranging from $3,199.95 to $6,399.95, depending on the number of channels and power-supply configuration.
The first shipments are expected in December 2026 and January 2027.
For home theater enthusiasts building a high-end system, the Starkrimson HT Ultra is an interesting new option because Orchard Audio isn’t simply adding more channels to an existing amplifier design. It is bringing its GaN-based Starkrimson architecture into a market where power, efficiency, physical size, and the ability to drive difficult speaker loads all matter.
And with the ability to configure the power supply around the channels that actually need the most power, the HT Ultra could be one of the more unusual multichannel amplifier designs to watch as it reaches home theaters.
