Audio Research Unveils the Reference 330M Monoblock: A New Benchmark in Tube Amplification
Audio Research has officially opened pre-orders for its highly anticipated Reference 330M vacuum tube monoblock amplifier. First showcased at High-End Munich 2024, the Reference 330M has been in development since 2022, and according to the company, the final product has surpassed even its original ambitious vision. Initially conceived as a “more powerful version of the Reference 160M,” the Reference 330M is now described as a harmonious blend of classic vacuum tube amplification and cutting-edge modern technology, delivering unparalleled sonic performance.
At its core, the Reference 330M is a fully tube-based amplifier, featuring a fully symmetrical tube signal path. The output stage is powered by six KT170 tetrodes operating in pentode mode, while the preliminary stages incorporate 6H30 and 6550 tubes. However, the design also integrates semiconductor components in the early stages, alongside proprietary bias and tube condition monitoring circuits. Additional modern touches include an RS-232 control system and an operating time counter located on the rear panel.

The amplifier offers both XLR and RCA inputs, catering to balanced and unbalanced connections, and includes speaker terminals for 8-ohm and 4-ohm speakers. It also features 12V trigger inputs and utilizes active cooling with adjustable fan speeds to manage heat dissipation. Given its high power consumption, the Reference 330M is equipped with a 20A IEC power connector.
Visually, the Reference 330M is a striking piece of engineering. Available in black or silver finishes, the amplifier showcases its exposed KT170 tubes behind a double glass screen. A unique GhostMeter VU meter appears to float within the glass, adding a touch of elegance and sophistication.
While Audio Research has not disclosed an exact price, the abbreviation “POA” (price on application) suggests that the Reference 330M is positioned as a premium offering. Industry estimates place the European price at around €100,000 per pair.
